The Problem

At the El Roblar School in Nicaragua, an old pump was in disrepair and unusable for years leaving the students and staff without a source of clean water. Some students would access water from a nearby stream, which was unsafe for use.

Project Updates

  • May 2014

    • At present, the small school located in the town of Camoapa has an old water pump that has fallen into disrepair and become unusable for some years.

  • May 2014

    • The sixth grade science classes at The School at Columbia University in NYC held a water event to raise funds for the rehabilitation of a well at El Roblar school in Nicaragua. Science teacher Ben Raikes worked with his students to examine various water related issues that people face every day across the world.

    • For the fundraising event, students received pledges of support from their friends and family and headed to the city waterfront to get a first-hand experience of what it might be like to have to fetch water.

  • Aug 2014

    • The students from El Roblar School in Nicaragua are happy to have their newly rehabilitated well.  We once again collaborated with local NGO, El Porvenir, to repair the old well that had been in disrepair for quite some time. Having a working well will provide water for all the students at the school who previously had no clean source of water on site.  This project was made possible through a fundraising effort by the sixth graders at The School at Columbia University in New York.
